A water softener is designed to reduce the hardness minerals — calcium and magnesium — that cause scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, and reduced soap performance. Softening and filtration address different problems.
What hardness is — and what it isn't
Hardness refers to dissolved calcium and magnesium. It is a mineral concern, not a contamination issue. Hard water still meets drinking-water standards; it primarily affects appliances, plumbing, and cleaning.
How traditional softeners work
An ion-exchange softener uses a resin bed that exchanges hardness minerals for sodium (or potassium). The resin is regenerated periodically using salt from a brine tank. This is the treatment specifically designed for hardness.
Salt-free 'conditioners' — an honest limitation
Salt-free conditioning products change how hardness minerals behave but do not remove them. They are not true softeners and do not produce the same results as ion-exchange softening.

Softening vs. filtration
